The Mississippi Crime Laboratory (MCL), a program of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, Office of Public Safety Programs, was established by legislative authority granted to the Commissioner of Public Safety in 1956. The MCL began operation when funding was made available in 1966. The Director of the MCL is appointed by the Commissioner and is responsible for the operation of the MCL and of the State Medical Examiner's Office (MSME). The MCL Director reports to the Director of the Office of Public Safety Programs.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation
(MBI), by statute, has general police powers. The mission of MBI is to investigate, report, and prevent criminal activities; to coordinate activities between federal, state, and local authorities involved in crime prevention and criminal investigations; and other related tasks as may be assigned. MBI has the responsibility through the Criminal Information Center for coordinating, sharing, and exchanging information with other agencies on an intrastate level concerning intelligence and other criminal activities. |
