Surveillance 101 Investigators preparing to conduct a surveillance operation in Colorado must consider many factors before actually starting to follow the subject. Gathering information about the subject from public records databases is generally a good place to start. This step often provides the Investigator with useful information relative to a surveillance case like property owned by the subject and often the address of friends or relatives. There are many conditions under which an Investigator might loose sight of the subject for various reasons. Having a list of current and former addresses comes in very handy when looking for the subject in these situations. Colorado weather conditions can't always be compensated for when 2 feet deep snow or ice on the roads prevent the pursuing vehicles from keeping pace. Using 4 wheel drive vehicles will sometimes bring unwanted attention to the Investigators in Colorado due to the high profile. During heavy snow conditions traffic on the streets will tend to thin out over longer periods of time. Investigators cannot blend with the flow of traffic if there's no other traffic on the road. Creating an uncomfortable distance between surveillance vehicles and the subject is often the only wise action. Another important factor is certainly the cold temperatures in Colorado during the winter months. While turning on the heat sounds like a great idea, the exhaust cloud emitting from the vehicle can and often will blow the surveillance. Windows fogging up is another major problem. During this time the Investigator must also be kept warm and a line of sight be maintained. Preparing to follow someone requires that you obtain the correct equipment to make watching the subject as inconspicuous as possible. All of the above having been taken to account, there are other things to consider. The make, model and year of the surveillance vehicles in use and the neighborhoods where long term surveillance is in progress. We'll start to cover a few of these Colorado issues in surveillance 102. |
